Preparing Children for What’s Next
At Dubbo Early Learning Centre, transitions are never rushed. Whether a child is moving to a new room, heading off to school, or settling in for the first time, we prepare them thoughtfully. For children moving rooms, we talk positively about the change well in advance, introduce them to their new educators, and invite those educators to visit their current room to build familiarity. Families and children take multiple visits to the new room so the process feels calm, supported, and exciting—not overwhelming.

Consistent, Reflective Practices
Our approach is shaped by research and guided by the EYLF, which emphasises continuity of learning and strong relationships. We use policies like our “Orientation for Children” and “Transition to School” procedures to ensure every step is planned and clear. We reflect regularly to consider the emotional experience of each child. For example, we recognise when a child is leaving behind a sibling, a close friend, or a favourite educator, and we respond with extra care, conversation, and connection.

Tailored Support for Individual Needs
We consider social justice, equity, and accessibility in every transition. This means adjusting our approach for families experiencing temporary trauma or for children with additional needs. For example, children who are vision impaired are supported with guidance from Vision Australia and Guide Dogs Australia, including orientation sessions that help them map out new rooms and locate their canes. These thoughtful supports make a big difference in helping all children feel capable and confident as they move forward.

Working With Families and Schools
We keep families involved and informed throughout the process. In preparation for school, we provide readiness reports, tips for home routines, and host visits to local schools. In December, children practise bringing their own packed lunch and wearing school bags—building independence and excitement. We also maintain communication with local schools and offer strategies to support children who may need help settling in. For some children, this includes ongoing collaboration with their future teachers to ensure a smooth, supported transition.
